Gobelin: An ideal fabric for a coat
How nice of you to take a look at this blog (with GiveAway!). My name is Marlies Witjes, better known on Social Media as @madebyLIESL and I love beautiful fabrics, a lover of prints and cool patterns. Call me a tough romantic. Summarize this in a piece of clothing and you have the protagonist of this blog: a beautiful coat. I call it the Gobelin Baron Coat. In my eyes a timeless piece and that is what I strive for: A wardrobe with timeless pieces that can be combined well with each other... and last a very long time. It all starts with a good choice of fabric for a jacket.
The outlet
In The Fabric Baron webshop you can find unique fabrics in their outlet. These quality fabrics will not come back in stock once they are sold out.
In the outlet my eye felt on this gorgeous Gobelin fabric.
The pattern
The pattern is from Knipmode october 2022: jas 19 .
Some adjustments are needed. The pockets are in the side seam and quite low. On Instagram (where I show the proces in stories) i already got some tips from my followers about this issue. In the end I increase the pockets by 8 and leave them in the side seam because I like the pocket flaps with the belt so much. It takes some getting used to putting your hands in the pockets, they are further back than usual.
At the bottom of the panels and along the splits I make extra filling parts. I think that's better for the rounded finish and durability of the jacket.
Gobelin fabric for a coat
I started working with the Gobelin fabric for the first time. The fabric is strong and durable. You can use it for upholstering furniture, making curtains or cushion covers. And so for clothes!! Multifunctional. Love it!
When working with this Gobelin fabric, I notice that the fabric does not fray immediately after cutting, but after processing the pattern pieces a little longer. I would cut some extra seam and/or finish the pattern pieces after cutting with a zigzag or serger.
Extra sturdy
The Gobelin is a very suitable fabric for a jacket. I choose to reinforce the buildings, but that is not really necessary. I do this because I notice that my homemade jackets lose some shape over time with wear. (Especially if I try to cram an extra sweater or scarf under it. Cold!) To prevent this, I reinforce the fabric for the Gobelin in-between jacket with interfacing.I also reinforce the many straps in this pattern. Especially since buttonholes are also made in it. I have to tell you this is going very well, those buttonholes. Even through different layers of fabric.
So I start by reinforcing the front and back pieces. For wearability, I only reinforce the sleeve cap of the sleeves with (a somewhat thicker) interfacing. The investment parts are of course also reinforced.
The zipper
Within the haberdashery department I have a choice of different zippers. From the collection of divisible block teeth zippers I choose the longest option (80 cm) in black. The pattern description advises to use a 100 cm double divisible zipper, but I know that I have to shorten the jacket anyway (I'm not that tall) and if the zipper stops earlier, that's no problem either. Then I already have more room to move (which you would also have with a double divisible zipper).
The lining
As a lining I choose the Venetia lining fabric for a jacket (not yet on the website; coming soon). In fact, you make a second coat in which the Gobelin fabric also returns. As an extra detail I process some black and white residual materials. I like to mix prints. Pretty inside! It is a nice quality lining, no pulls or frays during processing and what a great color! A very nice match with all those different colors of the Gobelin fabric.
From fabric for a jacket to a complete outfit
The fact that this Gobelin fabric contains multiple colors makes it easy to combine with different pieces in my wardrobe. And it is of course very easy with jeans, but how about a bright pink outfit? It's possible.
This jacket fits perfectly in my colorful spring wardrobe. Totally Happy!
Give away: Spring Box

I'm curious!

Bravo !
Je participe avec plaisir au concours !
